What is LASIK?

LASIK laser eye surgery is the most popular refractive eye surgery used to correct vision problems in the country. In traditional bladed LASIK surgery, a blade-like instrument is used to make a thin hinged flap on the cornea to reshape the eye.

What is bladeless LASIK?

At Eye Specialists of Louisiana, we pride ourselves on providing patients with the most advanced surgical treatment option to correct their vision: Bladeless LASIK.

Also known as all-laser LASIK, it is an advanced version of the traditional LASIK procedure. Instead of using a blade to create a flap on the cornea, it uses a laser.

As a result, the flap has equal thickness, has cleaner edges, and heals more quickly.

Antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drops are prescribed after the operation to promote healing and prevent infections.

What does LASIK treat?

LASIK surgery is used to correct various refractive vision issues, including:

It is important to speak to your eye doctor to determine if LASIK is a suitable option for your vision correction needs.

How is LASIK surgery performed?

You will lie on your back in a reclining chair during the procedure. You may be given medicine to help you relax as necessary and determined by your eye doctor.

Next, numbing drops are placed in your eye, and your doctor uses an instrument to hold your eyelids open.

Once your eyelids are out of the way, a suction ring will be placed on your eye. Before cutting the corneal flap, you may experience slight pressure and vision changes.

Your eye doctor will use a cutting laser to cut a small hinged flap away from the front of your eye. This allows the doctor to fold back a flap and access the part of your cornea that needs reshaping to improve your vision.

With each laser beam pulse, a minuscule amount of corneal tissue is removed. After the corneal reshaping is complete, your eye doctor will lay the flap back into place. The flap typically heals without requiring stitches.

LASIK surgery is usually completed in 30 minutes or less. If you need LASIK surgery in both eyes, doctors will generally conduct the procedure on the same day so that your vision is improved in both eyes at the same time.

LASIK Benefits

With state-of-the-art LASIK surgery from Eye Specialists of Louisiana, you can improve your eyesight and eliminate your need for eyeglasses and contact lenses for good.

Here are a few more benefits of LASIK eye surgery:

  • Fast, relatively painless procedure
  • Bandages or stitches are typically not required
  • Halos, or nighttime glare are significantly reduced
  • 20/40 vision correction or better – most patients say they no longer use their glasses or contact lenses at all
  • Results are nearly immediate
  • Recovery time, and side effects are minimal

How long does LASIK last?

LASIK works by permanently reshaping the front of your eyes, and that change technically lasts forever.

As we age, changes in our vision can and often do occur, leading to blurry vision over time. For most, the full effects of LASIK can last ten years or longer. However, the length of time depends on various factors, including your age, eye health, and any other eye conditions you may have.
